Ukraine and the European Union signed an “open skies” agreement

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, European Council President Charles Michel and European Comission President Ursula von der Leyen.

"Eight years later, the Common Aviation Area Agreement has finally been signed. I congratulate Ukraine, congratulate the presidents and all members of the European Union. These are high standards of flight safety, new opportunities for citizens and business, more flights and a wider geography of travel", - Zelensky said, as reported by the President's Office.

On the Ukrainian side, the agreement was signed by Prime Minister - Denis Shmygal, on the EU side by Foreign Minister - Josep Borrel and Slovenian Ambassador to Ukraine - Tomasz Mentsin.

The agreement will open Ukraine to some low-cost airlines, increase passenger traffic and significantly boost the tourism economy in Ukraine.

The agreement will remove market restrictions for Ukraine and will link it to the EU's internal aviation market.

Ukraine is committed to adopting EU aviation standards and applying European aviation rules. The agreement contains environmental and social provisions, as well as provisions on fair competition.

The signing of the Agreement will ensure the deepening of cooperation in the field of air transport, including in the context of industrial cooperation, in order to deepen economic, cultural and transport ties between Ukraine and EU member states.
